Boys of the Lough
One of the original and most enduring folk supergroups, renowned the world over, Boys of the Lough have been touring since 1967. United through a mission to bring traditional Celtic music to a global audience, the Boys have completed over 70 tours of the USA alone.
The group’s current line-up features Irishmen Cathal McConnell, Brendan Begley and Garry O’Briain alongside Shetland’s Kevin Henderson, who bring together their respective traditions on flute, whistles, accordion, melodeon, fiddle, guitar and song. Alongside natural technical brilliance from all corners, a lasting strength of the Boys’, since their first tour some five decades ago, is this diversity of the members’ distinctly individual traditions.
As early pioneers in an industry now almost unrecognisable to that in which they started out, the Boys continue to act as role models for many young musicians - and indeed have done for several generations. Their determination to present traditional music as it was intended - in its most acoustic form, allowing the instruments’ natural tones and colours to shine - coupled with a ready wit instantly set them apart as true originals, a status that has well and truly stood the test of time.
